Osteopathy

Osteopathy is a form of manual healthcare which recognises the important link between the structure of the body and the way it functions.

Osteopaths focus on your neuro-musculoskeletal system – the joints, muscles, nerves, circulation, connective tissue and internal organs that support your body and control its movements. They know how parts of your body should work together and the impact if they do not.

Using skilled evaluation, diagnosis and a wide range of hands-on techniques, Osteopaths can identify the root of your problems by finding important types of dysfunction in your body.

Rehabilitation

Rehabilitation involves the prescription of specific mobility, stretching, strengthening, stability and proprioception (balance) exercises, to promote full healing from an injury and to help avoid further injuries in the future.

Your Osteopath is highly trained and experienced with rehabilitation exercise prescription for sports and spinal injuries. He has a solid understanding of the underlying mechanisms of injury, the anatomy, physiology and biomechanics of the body and the healing processes that occur during recovery.

Depending on your goals you may require sports specific rehabilitation drills with the idea being that when you return to your chosen activity your body is better conditioned than prior to the injury.

Telerehabilitation

If you are unable to see us physically, we offer virtual therapy sessions that still benefit you and is accessible from anywhere. An online session can help you if you are suffering from pain, have a new injury or just want a little bit of extra help for an existing issue.

Although different from a hands-on session, we can still help identify issues by analysing your movement patterns and give you specific exercises to address your issues and get you moving again – all through a video call.

Dry Needling

Trigger-point Dry Needling (TDN) is an invasive treatment where sterile needles are placed into the skin and muscle to target myofascial trigger points.

Myofascial trigger points are sensitive points in the taut muscle that can cause pain, restriction in range of movement and results in a loss of function or sporting performance. Dry needling aims to create a local twitch response (LTR) which is an involuntary contraction of your muscle fibers. Triggering this response has been shown to result in a relaxation of the muscles and therefore decrease pain and increase movement.

Dry needling is a part of modern Western medicine principles and is supported by research. Preliminary research studies support that dry needling improves pain control, reduces muscle tension, and normalizes dysfunctions of the motor end plates (the sites at which nerve impulses are transmitted to muscles).

Sports Massage

Sports massage is designed to help athletes before, during and after training. It is useful for anyone who exercises to increase flexibility, prevent injuries and help with healing after a sports injury.

Sports massage is specifically tailored to different sports and sporting injuries. It is not a relaxing form of massage and can often be quite strenuous. It works by stretching tight muscles, stimulating inactive muscles and improving the condition of the soft tissue

The aim of sports massage is to reduce any pain or strain, improve blood flow and promote better sporting performance.

Electrotherapy

While it may sound a bit intimidating, Electrical Muscle Stimulation (EMS) really isn’t at all. It is a safe and effective modality that can be used to treat a variety of conditions And it feels awesome!

Electrical stimulation devices use self-adhesive electrodes placed around the painful area on the body. These electrodes are connected via wire leads to the unit (Compex®), through which electricity can pass and ultimately interact with sensory and/or motor nerves.

Electrical stimulation provides a variety of beneficial healing effects, including:

  • Reduce, eliminate, and/or control pain (both acute and chronic)
  • Increase local circulation
  • Decrease swelling
  • Reduce muscle spasm
  • Provide biofeedback (aka improve body awareness)
  • Improve motor coordination
  • Provide neuromuscular re-education
  • Preven or reverse muscle atrophy (especially after prolonged immobilization)
